- <p> DIED. HARRIET NELSON, 85, former Big Band singer, radio and
- TV actor; in Laguna Beach, California. Nelson herself once reflected
- that "nobody recognizes me without an apron on and a coffeepot
- in my hand." That was a characteristically wry observation from
- the distaff star of the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which
- ran on radio and television from 1944 to 1966 and starred the
- entire Nelson family. Harriet as Harriet was the sane center
- between increasingly restive sons Ricky and David and amiable
- but decidedly fumbling husband Ozzie (in real life the tireless
- creator and overseer of the series). The show's sedate humor
- was perhaps typified by the dry drollery of its title. But off-camera,
- the idyll was colored by tragedy: the 1975 death of Ozzie--Harriet's companion since he hired her as a singer for his band
- in 1932--and the plane-crash death of sometime rock star Rick
- in 1985.
