  15. <p>     DIED. HARRIET NELSON, 85, former Big Band singer, radio and
  16. TV actor; in Laguna Beach, California. Nelson herself once reflected
  17. that "nobody recognizes me without an apron on and a coffeepot
  18. in my hand." That was a characteristically wry observation from
  19. the distaff star of the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which
  20. ran on radio and television from 1944 to 1966 and starred the
  21. entire Nelson family. Harriet as Harriet was the sane center
  22. between increasingly restive sons Ricky and David and amiable
  23. but decidedly fumbling husband Ozzie (in real life the tireless
  24. creator and overseer of the series). The show's sedate humor
  25. was perhaps typified by the dry drollery of its title. But off-camera,
  26. the idyll was colored by tragedy: the 1975 death of Ozzie--Harriet's companion since he hired her as a singer for his band
  27. in 1932--and the plane-crash death of sometime rock star Rick
  28. in 1985.
